FlutterFlow + OpenAI Integration Guide

Adding AI capabilities to a FlutterFlow mobile app means connecting to OpenAI through a secure backend, never directly from the app, since your API key would be exposed in the binary. The pattern is straightforward: a serverless backend function holds the key and proxies requests between your FlutterFlow app and OpenAI's API.

Why FlutterFlow + OpenAI?

OpenAI's GPT models bring conversational AI, content generation, smart search, and data extraction to any app. For FlutterFlow builders, this means shipping AI features, chatbots, writing assistants, smart forms, language translation, summarisation, without machine learning expertise. The mobile-first nature of FlutterFlow makes it perfect for on-the-go AI tools that users reach for throughout their day.

Setting up the integration

Create a backend function (Firebase Cloud Function or Supabase edge function) that accepts a messages array, calls OpenAI's chat completions API, and returns the response. In FlutterFlow, add this endpoint as an API call under the Data → API Calls section. Map the request body to a FlutterFlow app state variable containing the conversation history. Bind the response to a text widget and trigger the API call on a send button tap.

Building a chat interface

Design a FlutterFlow page with a ListView bound to your messages app state variable. Each item in the list renders a chat bubble, user messages on the right, assistant messages on the left, styled with conditional formatting. On "Send" tap: append the user message to the list, call the backend API, await the response, and append the assistant message. This pattern produces a smooth chat experience without any Flutter code.

Real-world use cases

FlutterFlow + OpenAI is used for: AI companions and productivity assistants, language learning apps where GPT plays conversation partner, customer support bots embedded in service apps, document scanner apps (photo → Whisper or Vision → structured data), and smart form-fill tools that parse user input into structured records. App Studio has shipped several AI-powered FlutterFlow apps that reached top-10 in their App Store categories.

Common pitfalls

Never put your OpenAI key in the FlutterFlow API calls section directly, it will be compiled into the app binary and can be extracted. Always proxy through a backend. Implement a rate limiter in your backend function to cap per-user API calls and protect against cost abuse. Test on low-bandwidth connections, OpenAI responses can be 2–5 seconds on slow mobile data. Use GPT-4o-mini for speed and cost unless quality absolutely requires GPT-4o.
